Google docs can be used to work together on an article,research paper and other word processor type assignments,presentations and data compilations (spreadsheets).
While wikis on the other hand enable larger number of people to collaborate more easily which might become too messy on the Google docs.I have placed introductory videos for both of them but i will suggest Google docs as a good start.Just make a new word file in Google docs and invite your group members as collaborators and start working on it together at the same time, without the fuss of multiple versions each of the member can easily see who has written what and this will also solve the problem of half the group doing nothing.
